Gum Disease

Gum disease can be caused by the buildup of bacterial plaque. Other times, disease, genetics, smoking or age could be the cause of your symptoms. The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. Signs of gingivitis include red and swollen gums, bad breath, tender gums or receding gums. When caught in this stage, gum disease can typically be reversed, oftentimes with at-home care. Left untreated, gum disease can progress into periodontitis which requires more extensive treatment. Periodontitis can eventually lead to loose teeth and even tooth loss.

There are a variety of treatments for gum disease including self-care, medications, scaling and root planing. Your dentist can examine your gums at regular visits to check for signs of gum disease. If gum disease is present, your dentist can recommend the best possible treatment to restore your oral health.

Scaling & Root Planing

One treatment for periodontitis is scaling and root planing. This treatment involves removing the plaque and tartar affecting the gums. Special tools are carefully used and your gums will be numbed prior to treatment as they may be tender. If you have periodontitis, scaling and root planing may be recommended more than once over time to help reverse the effects of the gum disease and prevent it from worsening. Scaling and root planing has been very effective in helping a number of patients and it could help you as well!
